Originally, VGHTC Chiayi Branch was the Military Pneumonopathy Care Hospital, established on January 1, 1952, and transferred to the Army First Pneumonopathy Care Hospital in 1955. In July 1959, it was transferred by the Military formally because of the social requirements, and renamed to Chaiyi Veterans Hospital with 4 branches, Xiancao, Wanciao, Luman, and Tianzhong. According to the achievement of each stage, Xiancao and Tianzhong branches transferred to the Baihe and Changhua Veteran Homes. In 1966, the Wanciao branch transferred to the Wanciao Veteran Hospital supervising the Luman branch. Also, from a pulmonary tuberculosis hospital, the VGHTC Chiayi Branch transferred to a general hospital and set up an attached civic clinic office. In 1984, VGHTC Chiayi Branch was included in the National Medical Care Network by the Department of Health, Executive Yuan, and then VGHTC Chiayi Branch started to update and extend original facilitates relied on the medical technology support by the Veteran General Hospital. Since the 1st to 4th expansion projects were completed from 1990 to 2004, VGHTC Chiayi Branch can provide not only adequate medical care for the veterans, but also better medical services to people together.
Chrinic Disease Hospital

Original VGHTC Chiayi Branch adopted the military organization. After transferring to the Chaiyi Veterans Hospital in 1959, in addition to the Dean and Vice-Dean, VGHTC Chiayi Branch set Internal Medicine, Surgery, Radiology, Medical Technologists, Medical Supplies, and other medical units, and the Guidance Section, General Affair Section, Accounting Office, Personnel Office, and other administrative units. In addition, each of the 4 branches set 1 director.
After transferring to a general hospital in 1974, VGHTC Chiayi Branch not only added the Otolaryngology Division, Pediatrics Division, Dentistry Division, Ophthalmology Division, Electrocardiography (ECG) Room, Physical Therapy Room, and other medical services, but also set up the Pharmacy, Supplies Center, Dietary Department, Medical Administrative Section, Registration Office, Registration Room, Information Counter, and so on. VGHTC Chiayi Branch also set up these administrative units included the Secretariat Office, Guidance Office (Guidance Section originally), Personnel Office, 2nd Personnel Office (Ethics Office now), and Accounting Office. Continuously, VGHTC Chiayi Branch extended the medical services. The Bronchoscopy Room was set up in 1981, the Acupuncture, Hemodialysis, Electroencephalogram, Ultrasonography, Treadmill Electrocardiography, and other precise instructions were introduced in 1985, the Reproductive Medicine Library was established in 2000, and the Extracorporeal Shock Wave Center was set up in October 2001. In November 2001, the Chronic Psychiatry Unit added 75 beds and Respiratory Care Unit set up 12 beds. In addition, the Chinese Medicine Clinic was offered in February 2002, Fifty beds in nursing homes opened in 1999, the Nursing Home extended to 130 beds, and the Cardiac Catheterization Room was set up in July 2002. Complying with the SARS precautionary measures of the Competent Health Authority, 2 isolation beds and the Outdoor Fever Screening Station were set up in May 2003. Moreover, the Psychiatry Division added 20 day care beds in June 2003, the Medical Beauty Center was established in the Downtown Clinic in February 2004. To enhance medical service sufficiently, the original ICU in the 3F of E Building was transferred to the 6F of the new Emergency General Building (24 beds) in October 2004,(37 beds) in 2012,and the Operating Room was also transferred to the 5F of the new Emergency General Building on January 18, 2005.The nursing home will be extended to 66 beds in April 1998 ( a total of 246 beds )to effectively enhance the demand for patients , with four beds provided from June 2016. Palatanised Care Ward Service , 28 more beds (274 )beds for total ) in May 2017 ( care homes , The Palliative Care Unit opened two more beds in 2017and 2019respectively ( the total number of beds is now eight ).

The organization consists of 6 departments, 45 divisions, 2 centers, and 7 offices. The authorized workforce is 424 people and the annual budgeted workforce is 409 people. The 45 divisions are the General Internal Medicine, Neurology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Chest Medicine, Endocrinology & Metabolism, Allergy, Immunology & Rheumatology, Infection, Hematology, Nephrology, Respiratory Therapy, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Thoracic Surgery, Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, Orthopedics, Urology, Dermatology, General Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine, Community Psychiatry, Rehabilitation Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Drug Dependence Therapy Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Nuclear Medicine, Radiological Diagnosis,Radiology Department, Interventional Diagnostic Radiology Department,Family Medicine, Community Medicine, Palliative Medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Dentistry, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Medical Technologists, Rehabilitation, Pharmacy, Dietary, Traditional Medicine, Medical Intensive Care Unit, and the 2 centers are the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. The 7 administrative offices are the Personnel, Accounting, Ethics, Medical Administrative, Secretariat, Social Workers, and Occupational Safety and Health Room. There are more than 1,000 staffs in VGHTC Chiayi Branch (included contracted staffs).
